The American System (US Customary Units) and British Imperial Measures

The international nautical mile was first defined by the First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference, Monaco in 1929. This is the only definition that is widely used today and is the one that is accepted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Prior to 1929, different nations had their own definitions, and they Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States did not immediately accept the international value.

Meter (British English: metre) is the base unit of length in some measurement systems, including that of International System of Units (SI).
