T.R. Doongaji is from Nagpur in India, where Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata started his first venture, Empress Mills, in 1877. "I did what he asked me to," Says Doongaji. "Today, I realise that my entire identity is this name." A J.N. Tata student, he worked for 52 years (42 as an executive) in the Tata Group. The story began when Jamsetji purchased a 10-acre piece of land that was marshy from the Nagpur King and established Empress Mills. (It was established at Bombay in 1874 under the name of Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company Limited. Jamsetji had established an trading company in 1868.)

Jamsetji was not keen on his workers to be working in the filthy conditions he witnessed in the cotton factories of Lancashire. Therefore, in Empress Mills, he ensured adequate ventilation and an apparatus set up to humidify air. Sprinklers were put in place to minimize the damage caused from accidental fires. He also established an insurance scheme for provident funds that was one of the very first in India as well as an accident compensation fund for accidents.

After Jamsetji came back to Bombay after a long absence, he had earned enough money that he decided to turn his attention to buying property. In the next few years, he was one of the richest men in the nation. It was officially launched in February 11th, 1915, when Lord Willingdon Governor of Bombay was the first to inaugurate the project. "Today, the major chunk of our power is being supplied to industries, hospitals and residences," states Rajesh G. Naik, director of maintenance and operations at Tata Power. The total power plant's capacity is 447MW.

The main attraction of this project will be the huge 14-acre gardens located in Lonavala. Jamsetji was a passionate enthusiast in gardening, and brought home seeds and plants from across the globe. As the steel plant in Jamshedpur was in the process of being built and he wrote a lengthy letter to his son Dorabji about the rapidly growing range of trees would like him to grow on his property. Said Vivek Vishwasrao, head of biodiversity at Tata Power: "We fall in the northern region of the Western Ghats which is a significant bio-diversity hotspot. Certain species of animals, plants and birds that are found in this region aren't found elsewhere in the world." Jamsetji had been known as an "omnivorous reader", and was a lover of Dickens and Thackeray. "He loved driving, was a great judge of horseflesh, and was happy with his birthright Arabs, English Hackneys or Hungarians and of his clever turnout. He was also fond of boating and sailing, as well as entertaining his guests at picnics," writes Frank Harris in his book Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata: A Journal of his Life.

In the realm of 'firsts jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata's accomplishments stand out. From getting India's first pilot's license to establishing the first cancer center in the nation, J.R.D. Tata planted the seeds of an improved India. Tata's father R.D. Tata was a nephew of Jamsetji's mother and the mother of Jamsetji, Suzanne Briere, a French citizen. Tata was born in Paris and spent his early years in France. Following the death of his father, his son succeeded him as a director at Tata Sons at the age of 22.

J.R.D. was appointed Tata Sons chairman in 1938 at the age of 34 years old. Tata Sons had 14 companies at the time. When he left in 1991 the number of companies was 95. However, his contribution went far over and above Tata Group and its businesses. For example, he was instrumental in helping Homi Bhabha establish India's nuclear energy program. The most prominent of the businesses that J.R.D. founded included Tata Airlines (which later became Air India), as it quickly gained a worldwide recognition as one of the top airlines. "J.R.D. would always claim"that Air India was his first love I'd like to think that he'd declare the same about Tata Steel. Tata Steel was his second," says J.J. Irani, the former executive director at Tata Steel. "He would laugh at that, but he never gave me an answer."
